The retail sector continues to grow, with total retail sales in 2017 (which includes motor vehicles and parts sealers) surpassing $5 trillion for a million establishments. The National Retail Federation estimates that retail sales went up by 3.9% and that e-commerce sales increased by 13% in the same year.

The retail sector directly employs approximately 29 million people and supports more than 42 million jobs.

Multiple opportunities exist for growth in the US retail market for retail providers of all kinds and sizes, be it individual direct marketers, direct sellers, small-medium sized franchise unit owners, or large store operators. Foreign direct investment into the US retail sector reached $88.6 billion in 2017. The US houses some of the world largest and most well known retailers including Amazon, Starbucks, and Ford.
