Overview

Golden Pass LNG (Liquified Natural Gas) is a joint venture created in 2003 by Qatar Petroleum and ExxonMobil, who own 70% and 30% of the company respectively. The existing Golden Pass LNG terminal is a liquefied natural gas terminal and regasification facility in Sabine Pass, Texas. It is among the largest LNG facilities in the world and can accommodate up to 15.6 million metric tons of LNG per year. Golden Pass includes three specific businesses– an existing LNG import facility, an existing pipeline system and an expansion of their current facilities that will allow Golden Pass to export LNG. 

The new facility is expected to be operational in 2024 and is the product of a partnership of Qatar Petroleum and ExxonMobil affiliates. The project’s estimated send out capacity will be around 16 million tons of LNG per year. The new facility will utilize the existing state-of-the-art tanks, berths and pipeline infrastructure. In addition, new facilities for natural gas pre-treatment and liquefaction will also be constructed. The project is an approximately $10 billion investment in infrastructure on the Gulf Coast, which will generate billions of dollars of economic growth and millions of dollars in annual taxes to local, state and federal governments. It will also generate thousands of jobs during the construction phase and more than 200 permanent jobs once operational.

Qatar Fertilizer Company QSCC (QAFCO) was founded in 1969 as a joint venture with the Government of Qatar and a number of foreign shareholders, and has evolved steadily over the past five decades as a world-class fertilizer producer. As the country’s first large-scale venture in the petrochemical sector, QAFCO was established to diversify the economy and utilize the nation’s enormous gas reserve. QAFCO is 100% owned by Industries Qatar (IQ).

QAFCO currently has six world-class plants producing a sizable annual capacity of 3.8 million MT of ammonia and 5.6 million MT of urea. QAFCO is the world’s largest single-site exporter of urea with up to 14% share of the world supply. QAFCO is strongly committed to operating its assets safely, efficiently and in an environmentally responsible manner to produce high quality Ammonia and Urea. QAFCO aims to be the largest producer of urea in the world by 2030, driving towards a greener earth. As of 2020, Qatar Fertilizer Company has entered into a new gas sales and purchase agreement with Qatar Petroleum (QP) in effect from August 1 until December 31, 2035, covering the gas requirements of its units. The deal provides QP with cash to pursue investments, increase production, and expand operations. Qatar Fertilizer is dedicated to expanding its relationships with other organizations within the country and the United States.

Overview

Qatar Petrochemical Company (QAPCO) is one of the world’s largest and most successful producers of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) – a basic plastic polymer that is derived from oil and natural gas. QAPCO is involved in the production of four main products including the aforementioned low density polyethylene which is suitable for a wide range of thermoplastics processing techniques with applications such as films, pipes, cables and wires, and other moulded products. These products are also marketed under the Lotrène brand and exported to over 85 countries throughout the world. The second product that QAPCO produces is Linear Low Density Polyethylene (LLDP) which is suitable for all thermoplastic applications. The third is ethylene which is used as a feedstock for a wide range of chemicals. Approximately 50% of ethylene produced by QAPCO is utilised in the LDPE production process, and 25% is utilised by QVC in the production of ethylene dichloride, vinyl chloride monomer, and caustic soda. The remainder is exported to a number of Asian countries. Lastly, QAPCO also produces sulfur which is a by-product from the ethylene process and is mostly exported to several countries.

In addition to its core business, QAPCO has invested directly and indirectly in four associated ventures that contribute to the development of Qatar’s downstream petrochemicals sector. QAPCO is also involved in a number of joint ventures (JVs), including Qatar Vinyl Company (QVC), Qatofin Company Limited, and Qatar Plastic Products Company (QPPC), thereby, producing various petrochemical products and making QAPCO a regional petrochemical powerhouse.

Overview

The Qatar Gas company was founded in 1984 after the discovery of the North Oil Field several years prior. ​​The North Field lies off the northeast shore of the Qatar peninsula and covers an area of more than 6,000 square kilometers , equivalent to about half the land area of the State of Qatar.​​ The development of this major natural resource has been a significant factor in Qatar’s economic growth. The gas produced from this giant field is processed to produce Liquified Natural Gas, Gas To Liquids, Natural Gas Liquids, and other gas-related industries, in addition to pipeline gas for export.​​ Since then QatarGas has been able to become the largest Liquified Natural Gas producer in the world.

In 2018, QatarGas has achieved several goals such as managing and operating 14 LNG trains, six of which are mega trains, each with a production capacity of 7.8 mtpa​, two domestic sales gas production facilities, two condensate refineries, two helium production facilities, the Ras Laffan Terminal Operations, and major shipping and global sales contracts. It is planning on further expansion and to maintain and better its relationship with its partners in the US and across the world.

Overview

QatarEnergy (QE; and formerly Qatar Petroleum or QP) is the state owned petroleum company in Qatar. The company operates all oil and gas activities within the country, including exploration, production, refining, transport, and storage. QE’s President & CEO is HE Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, Minister of State for Energy Affairs. QE’s operations are directly linked with state planning agencies, regulatory authorities, and policymaking bodies. As of 2018 it was the third largest oil company in the world by oil and gas reserves. The company has many subsidiaries and is largely tied to all sectors of government and commerce. 

Liquified Natural Gas or LNG, is one of the dominant revenue components for QatarEnergy. QE is working on a major project called the North Field Expansion project which will work to expand the north east petroleum field on Qatar’s coast and include smaller projects such as new train lines, pipelines, and platforms. The project will increase Qatar’s LNG production by nearly 43% and is currently underway. QE also has a good relationship with other petroleum companies in the region such as Exxon Mobile which it has partnered with in its North Field Expansion project. 

Oil and gas have given Qatar one of the highest per capita incomes in the world and made it one of the fastest-growing economies.
