Overview

Of the many branches and stations that the Ministry of Defense (MOD) is responsible for, one of the more influential ones is the Al Udeid Air Base which is a military base located west of Doha, and is home to the forward headquarters of United States Central Command (USCC) and United State Air Force Central Command (USAFCC). The Al Udeid Air Base is a lasting example of the relationship between the United States and Qatar. It has the longest runway in the region, which is about 5,000 meters or 15,000 feet, and can accommodate almost 100 aircrafts. 

The Al Udeid Air Base is also home to Camp Andy. Camp Andy is a 288-tent complex in the Al Udeid Qatar air base, and is named in honor of Master Sergeant Evander Earl “Andy” Andrews. Camp Andy serves as the Al Udeid Air Base Qatar dorms.

The Ministry of Defense continues to grow and foster its relationship with the United States and the United States military. With continued cooperation, both countries are working to strive for regional peace and stability.

Qatari Diar Real Estate Company was established in 2005 by the Qatar Investment Authority, the sovereign wealth fund of the State of Qatar. Headquartered northeast of Qatar’s capital in Doha on the coast of the Arabian Gulf, Qatari Diar was entrusted to support the country’s growing economy and to coordinate the national real estate development priorities.

Overview

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MOCI) is responsible for overseeing commercial and industrial activities for the State of Qatar as well as directing these activities in accordance with the requirements of national development. The Ministry’s sphere of influence includes business development needed to attract investments, and supporting and developing exports. MOCI’s other responsibilities include developing methods and procedures for providing public services to the business and investment sector, regulating the practice of trade professions, registering the commercial and investment establishments, issuing the necessary licenses to carry out their activities, and supervising the regulation and control of markets in its area of competence. It has headquarters in Lusail City but offices all around the country. 

An essential aspect of the Ministry’s role is to take the necessary measures to protect consumers, combat commercial fraud, safeguard competition, and prevent monopolistic practices as well as protecting intellectual property rights. Of the many committees that function under the umbrella of the MOCI is the National Committee on Trade which was formed in 2011. The committee’s main objective is to coordinate with both the private and public sector to maximize the benefits of the State of Qatar’s membership in the World Trade Organization in such a manner that realizes the sustainable development objectives of Qatar. 

The Ministry is spearheading efforts to develop general policies to promote industrialization and national industries, developing and exploiting its existing industrial zones, and proposing the establishment of new zones.

Overview

The Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC) was founded in 2011 in order to ensure that the FIFA World Cup takes place in accordance with the highest level of standards. Since then it has also made rapid progress in building stadiums and other infrastructure, and ensuring the tournament and its preparations contribute to Qatar’s sustainable development. 

From the stadiums where football history will be made, the SC and its stakeholders are making sure that Qatar is ready to welcome the world in 2022.

Outside of creating a lasting legacy by hosting the 2022 World Cup, it is the goal of the SC that its work will have long lasting effects throughout the country. By improving and working on infrastructure, education, football for development, support for regional innovation and a dedication to improving workers’ welfare, the efforts of the SC and its partners are forging a better future for Qatar, the Middle East, Asia and the world.

Overview

The Ministry of Culture and Sports (MOCS) aims to enhance the role of culture by preserving identity and improving the cultural scene through initiatives such as the sponsoring and supporting of cultural productions, organizing events that contribute to cultural communication with the various multicultural communities, and enhancing Qatar’s cultural status both regionally and abroad. Some of their centers include: the Al Jasra Cultural and Social Club, Qatar poetry Center “Diwan Al Arab”, and Qatari Forum for Authors. The Ministry’s policy on sports aims to promote community participation in sports and physical activities in order to make Qatar a healthier country. The Ministry also seeks to create an environment that encourages the private sector to participate in sports investment partnerships that  support the development of national sports clubs and key organizations. Some of their sports clubs include Al Ahli Sports Club, Al-Duhail Sports Club and Qatar Racing, and Equestrian Club.

Established in 1995 by the then Amir Sheikh Hamad and his daughter Moza bint Nasser to realize their ambitious mission for Qatar, the Qatar Foundation (QF) has grown tremendously over the past few years. It serves the people of Qatar by supporting and operating programs in three core mission areas: education, science and research, and community development. The Foundation strives to nurture the future leaders of Qatar. By example and by sharing its experience, the Foundation also contributes to human development nationally, regionally, and internationally. In all of its activities, the Foundation promotes a culture of excellence in Qatar and furthers its role in supporting an innovative and open society that aspires to develop sustainable human capacity, social, and economic prosperity for a knowledge-based economy.

The organization has brought a number of international universities to Qatar to help develop an education sector in which young people can develop the attitudes and skills required for a knowledge economy that is not based on revenues from energy resources. This goal is also tied to Qatar’s Education City which is the country’s flagship branch of the world’s best educational institutions together in one residential square .  Its main science and research agenda is to build up Qatari innovation and technology capacity through research that results in technologies that can be successfully commercialized for the benefit of the economy. One of Qatar’s aims is to become a commercially successful research and development (R&D) hub that attracts the best and brightest. The community development programs aim to help foster a progressive society in Qatar, while also enhancing the cultural landscape, protecting Qatar’s heritage, and addressing immediate social needs in the community. The Foundation has played a key role in Qatar’s transformation into a political, economic and cultural powerhouse in the region.

The Foundation is trying to equip Qataris with the skills, education and qualifications to be competitive in the global economy.

Overview

The Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) was established to promote environmental sustainability and to coordinate Qatar’s environmental initiatives. The Ministry works closely with officials in a number of government entities to develop responsible environmental policy and is spearheading efforts to expand official records and banks of environmental data of the State. MME also plays an increasing role in expanding efforts to improve preservation and it includes the following: recruiting scientists and technical specialists to oversee monitoring systems and regulation, establishing an emergency preparedness committee charged with responding to environmental disasters, launching a nationwide campaign to clean up Qatar’s beaches, coordinating and maintaining knowledge banks on environmental data, and creating and managing a comprehensive biodiversity database including protected areas and marine resources and environmental impact.

The Ministry has already partnered with many entities and corporations in order to meet its national goals. A notable example of this is its relationship with Qatar Petroleum whose sponsorship of research into sea turtles is regarded as an illustrative example of the role that industry can play in enhancing environmental sustainability. The MME has already established some facilities with the aim of reducing the amount of waste and protecting the environment. These concrete initiatives include: Halul Island, of which new facilities are in use at the heart of the major storage and export terminal for Qatar’s oil and gas industries. These facilities include an incinerator to destroy waste, sophisticated air pollution monitors, and a wastewater treatment plant. Such initiatives will reduce waste on the Island and protect the home of animals like gazelles and many migratory birds. They also include Mesaieed, which is one of Qatar’s major industrial cities and is becoming the hub for environmental initiatives. Mesaieed is home to the integrated domestic solid waste management center that came online in 2011 and handles  treatment of garbage and sewage. The center is central to Qatar’s plans to dramatically increase recycling capacity. The city also hosts stations to monitor air and water pollution.

Overview

Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), was established by Amiri decree in 1979,  and it is Qatar’s premier not-for-profit healthcare provider. HMC manages nine hospitals and operates both the national ambulance service and a home healthcare service. Currently, HMC is the only healthcare organization outside the United States to receive simultaneous Joint Commission International (JCI) re-accreditation for all its hospitals, and in 2011, the ambulance service and home healthcare service also received JCI accreditation.

HMC is made up of nine different facilities, each with its own specialization and target demographic such as the Women’s Hospital, which was established in 1988 to provide specialized care for women and infants. The Women’s Hospital currently provides obstetrics, gynecology, neonatal care, emergency care, and newborn screening services. Its eight other facilities include Rumallah Hospital, Hamad General Hospital, the National Center for Cancer Care and Research, Heart Hospital, Al Wakra Hospital, Al Khor Hospital, Fahad bin Jassim Kidney Hospital, and Hazm Mebaireek General Hospital. 

HMC is also continuously collaborating with its research and healthcare partners such as Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar and Qatar Biomedical Research Institute. In 2011, it launched an initiative to integrate health, education, and research through collaboration with each partner institution, in order to achieve the highest possible quality healthcare in Qatar.

Overview

The Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) is the government entity responsible for drafting and overseeing the implementation of healthcare policy in Qatar. They aim to achieve better health, better care, and better value for all. MOPH is currently involved in making sure the goals outlined in the National Health Strategy 2018-2022 are met.

The National Health Strategy 2018-2022 is focused on aligning existing services and resources so they better fit the needs of the population that is rapidly stabilizing in its growth compared to previous years. The main way that MOPH aims to achieve these goals is through the implementation of the population health approach. This approach aims to achieve improvements by addressing the health needs of population groups rather than individuals, recognizing that factors such as gender, geography, employment status and age have a large impact upon individual health needs. The strategy has identified seven priority populations and five system-wide priorities. Twelve National Health Strategy Leads have been appointed to lead the planning and implementation for the twelve strategy priorities.

The MOPH has always been in charge of handling services that fall on the intersection of business and healthcare. They have continued their role as the provider of certifications, registrations, and assessments for healthcare related companies and organizations. They also offer services primarily aimed at making operations more efficient for those businesses and organizations, such as the option to request briefings.
