About the US Education Sector

Public education in the US is managed by the Department of Education, which states the following as their goals:

• Establishing policies on federal financial aid for education, and distributing as well as monitoring those funds
• Collecting data on America's schools and disseminating research
• Focusing national attention on key educational issues
• Prohibiting discrimination and ensuring equal access to education

The US education system is high quality, with many universities in the country dominating global rankings such as Harvard University, Princeton University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, all of which have produced cutting edge research. In addition, the US has numerous world class and prestigious boarding schools like Phillips Exeter Academy, Deerfield Academy, and Phillips Academy (Andover). The US education system is the top destination for international students, with 1.095M students from abroad; this is half a million more students than the second country, the UK.

There are plenty of opportunities for involvement with the US education sector even from abroad, such as in Qatar’s Education City, for example, which houses numerous satellite campuses of highly respected US universities including Cornell University’s Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar, Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service, Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, the Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar, Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar (School of the Arts) and Texas A&M University at Qatar.
